Shopify Ecommerce SEO Case Study: Scaling an Apparel Store to 47K+ Monthly Organic Users

We partnered with a US-based Shopify ecommerce store that had a minimal SEO foundation. Through a data-driven strategy, we helped them rank in the Top 3 for valuable keywords and increase organic traffic from 154 to 47,000 visits in a highly competitive US market.

The Challenge

When we started working on the project in July 2018, the website had no solid SEO foundation and was essentially starting from zero. Our goal was to build a scalable SEO system that would attract the right visitors to key collections and support long-term growth. Key challenges included:

  • Extremely low organic traffic and limited keyword visibility
  • Basic SEO setup with under-optimized collections and product pages
  • No structured category filters (sizes, product types), limiting indexation and search demand coverage
  • Weak backlink profile that made it hard to build authority in the niche

The Solution

We implemented an SEO strategy that focused on three high-impact areas for eCommerce: site structure, search intent coverage, and authority growth. To make the work pay off faster, we started with “money” categories and product pages and built the plan around those revenue-driving URLs.

Technical & Shopify SEO foundation

Fixed critical technical SEO issues, worked around Shopify limitations to support scalable category and product growth, cleaned up URL structures, and strengthened internal linking.

Keyword research & site structure expansion

Conducted keyword research across all commercial intent clusters and expanded category structure to cover the full spectrum of product types and sizes, adding SEO-friendly filters to capture more long-tail searches.

Content & on-page optimization

Optimized category and product pages for commercial and informational intent and improved relevance, navigation, and keyword targeting across the entire site to better match how parents search for kids’ clothing online.

Authority building & link strategy

Developed a white-hat link building strategy that helped our client gradually scale the number of high-quality referring domains and strengthen trust and authority signals for priority commercial pages.

Results

By October 2024, organic search had moved from a near-zero channel to a major source of traffic and visibility for the store, with strong gains across all core SEO metrics.

  1. +30,400% organic traffic growth

Monthly organic visits increased from 154 to 47,094, mainly due to expanded category visibility and strong rankings across commercial queries.

  2. 1,891 keywords in Top-3 rankings

Keywords ranking in the Top 3 grew from 27 to 1,891, which pushed many high-intent product and category searches to the top of the results.

  3. 687 new referring domains

Our link building strategy grew the backlink base from 9 to 687 referring domains and gave the site the authority needed to compete in SERPs.

  4. 887 pages ranking in Top-100

Pages in Google’s Top 100 increased from 241 to 887, expanding search visibility across many collections and products.
